Mother Najin and daughter Fatu live under constant protection by armed guards in
Kenya. They have lived this way since 2018, when they became the last two surviving
members of the species of northern white rhinoceros.
The demise of this magnificent creature is a tragedy brought about by human
hands—poachers killing staggering numbers of the animals in pursuit of the rhinos’
horns. Still, while the northern white rhino faces extinction, some humans are hoping to intervene and reverse the damage done by our species. Scientists are desperately trying to revive the species through in vitro fertilization. Najin and Fatu may yet be outlived by a new generation of daughters and sons thanks to human invention.
