Sounds in the Deep (2023) // 5'
Sounds in the Deep was composed for the 2023 Indiana Clarinet Experience (ICE), and was premiered on June 10, 2023 in Rhinehart Recital hall on the campus of Purdue University, Fort Wayne.
The theme for ICE 2023 was "Music is our Super Power" — and many of the choir pieces related to superheroes. Naturally, the first super power that came to mind was the ability to fly, but I thought that power would be wasted on me, given my crippling fear of heights. Perhaps a better super power for me would be to swim in the ocean and speak to the creatures in the deep.
This piece is a bit easier than my average clarinet choir piece, and the clarinet 4 part can be played reasonably well by some eighth graders. The contra part isn't difficult, but it's independent — try to have a bass clarinet player read it down an octave when possible if you don't have the instrument
